The clay belt east of Hallam.
The strip from Hallam through Endeavour Hills, Hampton Park and into eastern Cranbourne is reactive Newer Volcanic clay — Class M to H1 under AS 2870, with 30–50mm seasonal swell. Slab on un-stabilised clay cracks within 5 years. We strip 300mm of topsoil, lime-stabilise where shear strength is low, then build the pad up in 100mm crushed-rock lifts compacted to 98% standard maximum dry density. Test results in your handover folder.

Compaction is the line between “working” and “done”.
The number-one reason a slab cracks, a driveway humps or a sewer line collapses is bad compaction beneath it. AS 3798 says lifts not more than 150mm (we run 100mm), compact each lift before the next, and test to a documented standard maximum dry density. Civil sites get nuclear densometer results every 250m². Residential sites get hand-test confirmation and the operator’s 20 years of feel for whether the ground will move.
